Lockdown inspires Fife primary school bake-off
A bake-off competition had become a feature in Balmullo Primary School’s calendar for the past few years, and many pupils were disappointed that this year it had to be cancelled due to lockdown.
Children were baking regularly at home as part of their home learning so class teacher Wendy MacPherson thought they should put together a virtual bake-off competition. Enlisting the support of the parent council, Karen Bell came on board to encourage families through social media.

Wendy said: “All the entries were amazing, I collated them into a Powerpoint and it was sent to Fisher & Donaldson who kindly agreed to judge the entries and donate fudge doughnuts as prizes for the winner and runners up.”
After judging more than 20 entries, first place was given to Cameron and Lewis Dickson and family for Rainbow Delight, second place to Tiago Wiff-Marshall and family for Rainbow Focaccia, and third place to Annabel Barclay and family for Love and Kindness.
Wendy added: “The competition was a great way for families to have fun but with an important theme interspersed. As a staff we were keen to keep in touch with families and this was a great way to connect.”
