A campaign to raise £10,000 for our Maggie’s Centre is within striking distance of hitting its target.

In less than two weeks over £9000 has poured into the fund to support the vital work done by the cancer care team based in Kirkcaldy.

It was set up after the coronavirus pandmemic wiped out almost all of its major fundraising initiatives.

The first £1000 came within 24 hours, and, since then, generous Fifers have rallied round Maggie’s once again.

The appeal also received a major boost with a fantastic donation from Smith Anderson Group – one of the many businesses around Fife which have been long term supporters of the centre.

Olivia Slater from Smith Anderson said: “Our people are always willing to take part in fund raising and have benefited from the support of the centre in many ways. At this difficult time we are delighted to be able to make a donation to help out and hope to get back to fund raising very soon with the team in Kirkcaldy.”

She said: “People with cancer and their family and friends need us now more than ever.

“We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the Fife people towards our appeal, to Smith Anderson Group Ltd who generously made a contribution to bring us closer to our target and to the Fife Free Press for their continued support throughout.

“ It is brilliant that so many have who have been able to contribute have done so – thank you!”

While the building is currently being used as a respite hub for frontline health staff at Victoria Hospital, Maggie’s continues to offer support by phone and online, and it is handling more calls than ever from Fifers coping with a cancer diagnosis while also contending with self isolation and separation from families and loved ones.

Tu Edwards, centre fundraising manager, said: “We have taken so many challenging calls from people who have cancer and who cannot have their loved ones around them right now.

“This is a very anxious time for anyone going through this.

“People have been in touch every single day, and our team has been able to listen, to re-assure and also offer practical help on issues such as benefits to try to easy their worries.

“We will keep on doing everything we can to help.”

The fundraising campaign also continues with more people staging their own online initiatives as well as making direct donations.

Lorraine Carruthers, from Kirkcaldy is organising a Ladies Night on Zoom with her friends.

Lorraine said: “It would have been the tenth ladies night in March, but I had to cancel this due to social distancing.

“I saw Maggie’s appeal and decided to hold a remote party instead. I’ve organised a quiz, singing, auction of five lovely hearts painted by Susan McGill Designs, who have
