Mossmorran could be about to flare again later this month.

The plant has warned communities it has a programme of maintenance scheduled which may result in the need to activate its flare.

It comes as the most recent incident of elevated flaring – caused by a power failure during this week's severe thunderstorms – was brought under control.

On Tuesday, the annual ‘Turnaround’ at the Shell Fife NGL plant gets underway, and lasts until Saturday 22nd.

In order for the maintenance work to be carried out in safety, the plant said it needs to empty Module 1 of hydrocarbons, which will require use of the flare.

It said: “We will prioritise the use of the ground flares to minimise the impact on the community but you may see occasional, short periods of low intensity flaring in the elevated stack. We do not expect each period to be for more than a few hours."

Environment regulator,SEPA, has been informed.
