MSP's sadness at Carlton bakery closure

Founded in 1942, William McMillan Limited, which traded as Carlton Bakeries, ran bakery facility and 10 retail shops across Fife.

The firm announced on Thursday that they would cease trading and would go into liquidation.

Mr Torrance paid tribute to the bakery, but said his thoughts were with the staff.

He said “I am hugely disappointed by the announcement that Carlton Bakeries has gone into liquidation.

“The family business has been an icon in Fife for many years now and will be missed by all of us.

“I think we all had a favourite Carlton cake and for me it had to be the fudge doughnut - it has been lovely to see so many people posting pictures and sharing stories about theirs on social media.

“My thoughts are with the 60 staff, and their families, who have lost their jobs.

“I know they are being supported through this difficult time by Fife Council’s economic resilience team and I sincerely hope that a resolution can be found that will help both them and the company.”
