‘Nightmare’ over for new Leven restaurant which opened just three weeks before lockdown

A Fife couple have welcomed back customers to their first restaurant – after it was forced to close just three weeks after opening.

Hazel Robertson and Chris Bray launched HC Bar and Catering at the Scoonie Golf Club just three weeks before lockdown was imposed.

It was “nightmare” for Chris and Hazel.

The couple, ineligible for any grants of financial support, were helped by the club, which did not charge them for the lease during the period it was closed.

Now the restaurant, which is open to anyone, not just club members, is back open and busy again.

“It’s been brilliant,” said Chris, “and picked up really well.”

The restaurant is just one of many in Leven taking part in the UK government’s Eat Out to Help Out scheme, which gives customers a 50 per cent discount on food and drink, up to £10 per diner, from Monday to Wednesday.

Chris said the restaurant has had more customers on those usually quiet days due to the scheme.

Chris, a painter and decorator, helps out at the bar at peak times, while Hazel is the chef, making a range of home-made meals – which have been making customers return for more.

This is the first restaurant the couple have run.

“Hazel used to work at the old restaurant, but then the lease ended,” said Chris.

“She might have lost her job with new owners. We just took the opportunity.

“She has gone from employee to employer.”
