One of the oldest Burns clubs in the world is set to mark its own history.

St Andrews Burns Club has applied to Fife Council for permission to place a plaque at Southgait Hall where it was formed in 1869.

The South Street building is now flats, but it was where the club - number13 in The Robert Burns World Federation which itself was founded in 1885 - began 150 years ago.

The application., first lodged in 2019, will be considered in due course by the planning authority.

The news comes shortly after the club confirmed the cancellation of its 2021 Burns supper because of COVID regulations.

The decision was taken with “great reluctance”, but, on the club’s website, Frank Quinault, president, said: “Even if it were legally permissible to hold the Supper, which is most unlikely, it would not be sensible to bring such a large group of people, many of whom are categorised as especially vulnerable, into close contact for an entire evening.”
