It will offer a calm, relaxing environment away from the pressures of managing wards during the pandemic.

The hub will be based within the staff club at the hospital and half of the funding will come from the generous benefactor who gifted NHS Fife £500,000 in April to provide additional support for patients and the healthcare staff working tirelessly to care for them.

A further £100,000 has been pledged from existing NHS Fife endowment funds.

The idea for a permanent hub came after staff used Maggie’s Centre as a place to relax during the initial phase of the pandemic.

The centre was handed over by the charity - it was one of the first wellbeing hubs to be created in Scotland.

Architectural drawings have been created to transform the staff club to include a lounge area, dining space, and a mezzanine level with an informal meeting space.

Work is planned to begin soon with completion due in the autumn.

Plans are currently being developed to create permanent staff hubs in the other healthcare sites across Fife.

Tricia Marwick, who chairs Fife Health Board Endowment Fund Trustees, said: “This year has been a year like no other and staff working in our hospitals deserve immense credit for their efforts in the most challenging of circumstances.

“The new support hub will not only provide welcome respite for healthcare staff, it will also serve as a lasting reminder of their incredible and heroic efforts in managing the most significant health emergency in a generation.”
