A photograph from the archives has spotlighted how much shops have changed - together with an appeal for information.

It was taken in a grocery shop in Valley Gardens, Kirkcaldy in the 1950s, long before the notion of self service was established. It was unearthed by Tom Harris who would like to try to identify the youngsters in a bid to pinpoint the actual date the photo was taken. If you can help, please email [email protected] and we will pass on the details

He said: “The young bespectacled white overall wearing man in the background is Fred Hubbard, the owner of the shop, and the dapper assistant sporting a bow-tie but no overall, holding out for the approval of the customer the slices of bacon that he has just cut, is his father Tom Hubbard the then MP for Kirkcaldy.

“This shop predates today’s self service shop layout by several years and you can see on the counter the goods that the assistant has already brought from the shelves around the shop, including a jar of jam and a container of ’Mirro Miracle Suds!’! for the lady customer standing in the foreground.

“The very sharp cutting blade of the bacon slicer is dangerously within reach of the customer and the bacon on the machine, in addition to being well within customers’ breathing and coughing distance, can be seen to consist of more fat than meat.”He hopes someone may be able to help identify the young boys on the left.
