Selfless Fife boy offers help to elderly neighbours

A thoughtful St Andrews boy has offered to help his elderly neighbours who are staying inside to avoid catching the Coronavirus.

With some Fifers remaining indoors, making it difficult to get food and essentials, little Corey Philip, an 11-year-old P7 pupil at Lawhead PS, has offered his help.

Over the weekend, Corey put together flyers urging those who needed shopping to contact him. He then put these through letterboxes of the residents on his street.

“If they are scared or not able to go out, he said to put a note through our door and put my number on it,” said Corey’s mum Fiona.

“He also went to a neighbour across the street to have a quick word, and asked to help identify people who live by themselves or might need help.”

One neighbour has already contacted Corey. While she currently gets help from her daughter, she said she might need help in the future.

“The man from across the road came over to say he was thankful and that it was a thoughtful thing to do,” Fiona said. “He only went out over the weekend, so more people might get in touch in the future.

“It’s a depressing time, but this is such a nice thing to do.”

This is not the first time Corey, who is described by his mum as “thoughtful”, has helped his neighbours. During the Beast from the East two years ago, Corey cleared paths with a shovel.

“He does it by himself,” Fiona added.

“I am proud of him. He does like to think of other people.”
