Taking pictures or video is understood to be prohibited by centre management, but the man says during the clip that he was continuing to film out of fears for his own safety.

There are also claims on the video that the staff member assaulted the man holding the phone.

The incident ended with further staff members arriving as the man was escorted from the premises, with both he and staff then shouting at each other as he left.

In a statement, shopping centre management said: “We have been made aware of the video footage produced by Mr Alan Newton on Monday 1st March 2021 at the Kingsgate Shopping Centre, Dunfermline.

"As a consequence a formal investigation has been commenced.

“The act of producing video or still images, is prohibited under Home Office guidance in privately owned places open to the general public and this is clearly stated at every entrance to the Kingsgate Shopping Centre. However, it appears we failed to communicate this in an appropriate manner to Mr Newton.

“Our thorough investigations will continue and any resultant actions affecting the relevant site personnel will be undertaken by their employer, our SIA ACS accredited third party supplier Joint Security Services.
