The group’s weekly planting visits have been concentrated in the gardens where they have been continuing to develop the stumpery close to the railway station as well as working on a bed there and putting in sustainable planting.

They have also planted beds at the War Memorial itself to brighten up the area ahead of Remembrance Day on November 11.

But they are in need of volunteers to help them continue their work.

Alice Soper, chairman of Growing Kirkcaldy, said: “Our weekly planting visits have been focused on the Memorial Gardens where we have been continuing to develop the stumpery close to the railway station and have also planted beds at the War Memorial itself in time for the approaching Remembrance Day on November 11.

"Looking ahead to spring 2021, we have planted 2000 tulip bulbs in the four planters, while our very recently planted bed adjacent to Abbotshall Road should provide an almost tropical appearance by next summer!

“Our stalwart group goes out every Monday to dig, weed and plant and despite current restrictions, we make sure we keep a safe distance from each other.”

But she added that they need more volunteers to help out: “Our only worry is that we run out of time and resources to keep the areas maintained. I would love more volunteers to come along and help weed and water - even an hour a week would be welcomed,” she said.

"Similarly, it would be great to see more voluntary groups like ours working across Kirkcaldy.”

Judith Kerr, secretary, said they have received a number of plant donations as well plants bought from the sale of their Christmas wreaths last year which have been used in the gardens.

She added: “We would love to support any group who would like to improve their area of the town. We have lovely beaches and parks and people should be proud of what we have here in Kirkcaldy. We want people to take ownership of their own area.”

Anyone wanting to donate plants to the group or wanting advice on how to improve their local area can either email Judith at [email protected] or call 01592 203161.
