The appeal is already 57 per cent towards its target – despite only being launched at the end of last week.

Since Thursday, donations have poured into the Just Giving page, with many also saying how much our Maggie’s Centre meant to them during their cancer journeys.

The charity set up a £10,000 appeal after almost all of its major fundraisers were lost in the coronavirus lockdown.

Maggie’s relies almost entirely on donations, and the money will ensure its vital support for people living with cancer continues through the crisis and beyond.

While the building has been handed over to NHS Fife to be a hub where frontline staff can relax, Maggie’s continues to offer support by phone and online, and it has been dealing with a significant number of callers as people deal with their cancer diagnosis in a time of social distancing and isolation.

The centre launched the appeal on Thursday, and, overnight it netted £1000.

That figure has now broken the £5000 barrier and continues to climb thanks to the generosity of Fifers.

Alison Allan, centre head, said: “On behalf of Maggie’s and all the people with cancer we help, I’d like to say a huge heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported us and who has made a donation to our appeal during these unprecedented times.

“We are overwhelmed by the level of care and kindness from this incredible community to give so generosity to reach over 50 per cent of our £10,000 target in a matter of days.”

A fundraising page set up by Sandy Powell’s fundraising page – which is linked to the centre’s JustGiving page – has also taken off.

Sandy, from Coaltown of Wemyss, was diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer after returning from holiday in January.

He has shared his own photographs online to tap into some very personal, positive memories, and turned it into a fundraiser for our Maggie’s Centre which has offered him support and advice.

While I have your attention, I also have an important request to make of you. In order for us to continue to provide high quality and trusted local news on this free-to-read site, I am asking you - wherever possible and providing it is safe for you to do so - to also please purchase a copy of our newspapers; the Fife Free Press, Fife Herald, St Andrews Citizen, East Fife Mail and Glenrothes Gazette.

Inevitably falling advertising revenues will start to have an impact on local newspapers and the way we continue to work during this period of uncertainty.
