Mourners at funerals in Fife have been told that face masks are now mandatory at services.

The new rules came into force at the weekend.

Face coverings were previously encouraged, but are now compulsory.

Fife Council confirmed the change in a Facebook post to give people advance notice if they are attending a service in the days ahead.

Restrictions on numbers allowed to attend to pay their last respects remain in place. Mourners also have to adhere to 2metres social distancing.

The local authority’s statement highlighted “ important new legislation that you need to be aware of.”

It stated: “From August 8, it will be compulsory to wear a face covering if you are attending an indoor funeral. Previously it was only advised - now it's the law.

“This includes funeral services in crematoriums, funeral directors’ premises and places of worship.”

The council confirmed that no more than 20 people can attend a funeral service, whether it is held indoors or outdoors.
