The incident happened around 10.40am and sparked a major police response.

The bank remains cordoned off with officers posted outside.

Police say the two men threatened staff with a handgun and a crowbar and demanded cash.

They fled with a quantity of money, riding off on two bicycles on Alford Avenue.

The men were both wearing dark clothing including black caps, and carried green carrier bags.

Chief Inspector Stevie Hamilton, Local Area Commander, said: “Fortunately no-one was injured in what was a frightening incident for the staff and customers at the bank. Officers are currently speaking to witnesses, carrying out searches of the area and making enquiries at neighbouring premises.’’

He added: “The two men approached on bikes from Alford Avenue and left again in the same direction, so I’m keen to speak to anyone who may have seen them before or after the robbery so we can establish their movements.’’

Police have put extra patrols into the area.

They are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to call them on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
