Police launch investigation after gorse fire at East Sands in St Andrews

Police in St Andrews are looking into the circumstances surrounding a gorse fire in the East Sands area of the town that took hold near to the Fife coastal path.

The incident occurred around 7.30am yesterday (Wednesday) and left a large area of land scorched as a result.

A male was reportedly seen acting suspiciously in the area and officers want to hear from anyone who can help identify him.

He is described as between 40 and 60-years-old, medium build and wearing a beige hoodie, black trousers and a black beanie hat.

Witnesses noted that he walked with a distinctive swagger and was carrying a white plastic bag.

Pat Turner, St Andrews ward sergeant, said: “This is a worrying incident that could have had far more serious consequences had the fire been able to spread.

“The smoke from the fire was blown towards a nearby caravan park, which was very concerning for the residents.

“In addition the incident tied up police and fire service resources for some considerable time, which could have had serious repercussions should there have been another incident in the area.”
