Nearly 60 new homes have been approved for a former coalmining site in the west of Cardenden.

Housebuilding firm Derranside Homes will build 59 affordable homes in two cul-de-sacs at what it calls Balgonie Grove, on the former colliery site behind Jamphlars Court.

The number of homes proposed is more than double the estimated capacity of 27 outlined in the Fife Local Development Plan - but members of Fife Council's Central and West Planning Committee ruled that the benefit to the area outweighed any infraction of the blueprint.

A report prepared for the committee noted that the design of the homes was acceptable and that the size of the development would not have an overbearing effect on local schools.

It said the proposal would provide affordable housing in an area where there is an established need, on a site allocated for housing development.

Councillors approved the development with 27 conditions. The homes are expected to be built in three phases spanning between now until mid-2023.
