The Beacon in Burntisland is the Fife Sports & Leisure Trust only venue which has remained closed since the start of lockdown last March - sparking concerns over its future.

All other centres were brought back in a phased return last year, but are currently shut under the tighter lockdown restrictions.

And bosses at the trust are still trying to find ways of making the Beacon fit to be open once the pandemic eases.

The centre, which includes a 25m pool and flumes as well as a gym , sauna and steam room, wasn’t designed to cope with 2m social distancing, and there are serious technical issues with the water flow - its circulation doesn’t meet industry standard under COVID regulations.

Councillors at last week’s meeting of the housing and communities sub-committee were given an updated brief on the problems facing the centre.

Emma Walker, chief executive of the trust, said, every effort was being made to address the challenging issues.

She said: “A lot of work has gone on behind the scenes to get consultants in to come up with a plan for the short term and long term and get this facility back up to standard and into operation.”

Their report has just landed on her desk, and the trust will now take time to study its findings before deciding on its next steps.
