Lockdown sparks big rise in numbers exploring Fife coastline

The trust which manages Fife’s countryside and coast has reported a huge rise in the number of people heading outdoors during the pandemic.

A summer in lockdown resulted in a “large increase” in visitors across many destinations managed by Fife Coast and Countryside Trust (FCCT).

That brought new pressures - but the trust has not had to draw on any additional financial help from Fife Council to cope.

The update was given in a report to councillors on the housing and communities sub-committee this week.

Paul Vaughan, head of communities and neighborhoods, told councilors the arm’s length trust had been “nimble” in adjusting to the ever-changing conditions brought about by Covid-19.

Mr Vaughan said: “More and more people are heading out to enjoy Fife’s coastal and countryside in lockdown. FCCT faces the challenge of balancing increased public pressure on outdoor facilities, significant developments in the field of environmental conservation, outdoor access, and education with a challenging funding landscape.”
