The call comes from Neale Hanvey MP, who welcomed the key step forward but said: “The focus needs to be on action backed up by council resources to make it a success.”

He welcomed the overwhelming vote by Kirkcaldy area committee on Tuesday to pull together all the proposals for the town centre into one new plan.

Mr Hanvey said a joined-up approach was key to helping it move out of lockdown.

He said: “It was great to see councillors get behind this move to build on the recent positive stories coming out of Kirkcaldy town centre.

“It brings together lots of the key themes that have come out of those meetings, so it’s really encouraging to see that we’re all on the same page.”

Be he stressed: “We need to make sure this isn’t just another ‘talking shop.’

“We don’t need more studies telling us what we already know – big chains are pulling out, the High Street needs investment and refurbishment, and there is no single solution to creating a vibrant town centre.”

Mr Hanvey called for “a joined-up and meaningful intervention to breathe new life into the town centre and set it on the path to recovery” and pledged: “I’ll work with anyone, across parties, to make sure this strategy is a success.”

He has meetings scheduled with the leaders of the area committee, and Steve Grimmond, Fife Council’s chief executive.

Mr Hanvey added: “This motion gives us a good foundation to build upon these discussions.”
