Councillors have agreed a new road safety plan where a little girl was knocked down and died from her injuries.

Three-year old Robyn Knox was struck by a car on Townhill’s Main Street at the beginning of August. She died a short time later at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

At today’s meeting of the City of Dunfermline area committee, councillors agreed the first phase of measures to the street to improve pedestrian and vehicle visibility and safety.

The plans include the removal of a parking lay-by, and the installation of a widened footpath.

A paper to councillors said: "The existing footway is narrow. More space would be desirable for pedestrians in this busy area."

Cllr Helen Law, committee convener, said: "For many years there has been a desire to change the parking and some of the arrangements on Main Street.

"I'm pleased that we have been able to bring this paper forward today as the forerunner of a number of changes that are now going to be made to make the whole area safer."

Local residents have also raised concerns about vehicles parked in front of a convenience shop on Main Street adjacent to the junction with Loch Roam which obscure sightlines for both the junction with Loch Road and the adjacent pedestrian crossing.

Zigzags for the adjacent crossing will now be extended, ensuring no vehicle can park or load outside the shop. A 'loading only' bay will be included on Loch Street.

Additional parking will be provided further along the street by moving the existing bus stop and bay.

Plans also include the change of the No Waiting/ No Loading prohibition to ‘No Waiting At Any Time’ , reducing their length to tie in with the extended crossing zigzags and the loading bay; and the existing parking bays north of Loch Street.

The restriction will be extended on the north side of Loch Street to the car park entrance.

The new restrictions will be monitored by parking attendants.

Cllr Law said road safety "has been a long standing problem in Townhill but hopefully now we have resolved it."
