Refurbishment plans unveiled for Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court

Plans to refurbish the frontage of Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court have been unveiled.

A planning application submitted to Fife Council outlines the repairs needed to the building in Whytescauseway.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service is seeking listed building consent for external alterations including repair work to rooflight and glazed panels, installation of cladding and roof covering, and associated works

It said the court’s roof glazing is in poor condition and a constant source of leaks.

A report submitted as part of the application said: “Being single glazed, it is also a major source of heat loss from the building causing condensation to form on the internal surfaces, resulting in peeling paint and deterioration of interior finishes. The glazing also contains asbestos.” The service propose removing the sloping glazing and infill with a highly insulated composite roof. The glazed gables will be reinstated in good quality double glazed curtain walling.

The court was built between 1893 and 1894. It was extended in 1982 to provide more courtrooms.

Councillors will consider the application in due course.
