The Leven, Kennoway and Largo ward by-election is underway, and a result is expected late tonight.

It was prompted by the resignation of SNP councillor Alistair Hunter, who has since emigrated to Australia.

The result, which will be counted and announced at Fife House in Glenrothes, is likely to be seen as a barometer of public feeling ahead of the Scottish elections in May.

There are five candidates bidding to win the seat – Colin Davidson (Labour), Alistair Suttie (SNP), Graham Ritchie (Conservatives), Iain Morrice (Greens) and Steve Wood (Lib Dem).

Linda Bissett, depute returning officer for Fife urged people to make their vote count.

She said: “Voting is the most important way for residents to make their voice heard on issues which concern them.

“It’s their opportunity to exercise their right to help influence and shape what happens locally.”

Polling stations will be open until 10pm and people who left it too late to post back their postal vote can hand it into a polling place in the ward.
