Possible strike across four postcode areas in support of Cupar postie Dave

Postal workers across central Scotland have voted to strike in support of sacked Cupar postman Dave Mitchell.

But the Communication Workers Union (CWU) indicates that an all-out strike is not imminent.

Ray Ellis, Assistant Secretary of the CWU, confirmed that the ballot had said “yes” to a strike, but continued: “We are seeking urgent talks with Royal Mail to resolve the issue.”

Postmen in Fife have already staged two days of strike action in support of Mr Mitchell, and there has been a series of protests at the town’s sorting office.

Mr Mitchell had 27 years’ service as a postman before he was sacked in 2014 after test items allegedly went missing. No evidence was found despite Mr Mitchell, his home, car and van being searched by the Royal Mail investigation bureau.

The company has consistently refused to reinstate Mr Mitchell despite a ruling from an employment tribunal.

If a strike was to go ahead it is likely that as well as Fife, Edinburgh and the Lothians, Stirling and the Borders could be affected.

Local MP Stephen Gethins has called on the Prime Minister to look in to the matter.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail is very disappointed that CWU members across four postcodes in the east of Scotland have voted for industrial action over an employment tribunal case. Any action or threat of action is damaging to our business.

“In this case, there was sufficient evidence for us to dismiss Mr Mitchell. Four out of five test pieces of mail for Mr Mitchell’s delivery frame went missing on three separate occasions. All other test items in this office for other employees were delivered correctly.

“We are continuing to talk to our people and unions about this matter. We have robust contingency plans in place to ensure we continue to deliver a high quality service to affected postcode areas.”
