Reasons to feel good about Kirkcaldy Waterfront

It's all happening down at the Waterfront.
It's all happening down at the Waterfront.

The Prom, the Promenade, The Esplanade, the Waterfront – call it what you will, but it’s been under-used for too long.

But that’s starting to change. People are waking up to the fact that we have something special on our doorstep, so here are a number of reasons things to look forward to – some new, some old, but all good.

Bike rally

In March 2018, we saw a huge rally for motorcycle fans at the Prom.

They had travelled from as far afield as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, as well as from all points of the Kingdom to attend the first Bikes On The Beach event of the year.

A bumper turn out of around 350 bikers of all ages and on everything from the latest superbikes to custom Harley Davidson’s, no doubt spurred on by the sunshine and blue skies

Fitness

It has been announced that there will be a new outdoor green gym on at the Waterfront.

The facility will be located on the raised area opposite Volunteers Green on the sea side of the Esplanade.

Work is set to start in the next few months. Pretty soon, all you joggers who like to take in the view across the Forth during your run will be able to stop and use the fitness equipment.

Regeneration

It’s long overdue, but the revemped Waterfront is coming.

The £1.4m improvements will see greenspaces and improved parking facilities.

The road will be reduced to a single lane to create more parking spaces.

Cinema

An ongoing campaign by the Fife Free Press aims to being a cinema back to Kirkcaldy, and things are certainly moving in the right direction, with the demolition of the old swimming pool near the Mercat.

The site is the favoured place for a new multiplex, and a fresh drive by the site owners is being made to attract a cinema operator.

New brochures are being produced to show interested firms just what Kirkcaldy has to offer.

And as the voice of local people grows louder with every petition signature, it looks like it’s working.

News has reached Fifetoday.co.uk that a cinema provider has now expressed an interest.

Beach Highland Games

The Beach Highland Games is growing every year, and is the only beach Highland games in the UK.

The event grows more every year, with new events added and the reputation of the event spreading further and further.

Who knows what next year will hold?

Car ride outs

Car buffs have long been attracted to the area, but Kirkcaldy’s status among gearheads is always on the rise, with events drawing crowds from across the country to take in all the spectacular and unusual cars.

You can see all sorts of unusual vehicles there, and events are often held throughout the year,

And those who have spent all their precious time and money sprucing up their pride and joy are only too happy to show them off.

Links Market

We can’t talk about the Prom without mentioning the longest street fair in Europe.

The Links Market is one of the highlights of the year, bringing visitors to the town from far and wide.

Everyone has a favourite ride. What’s yours?

YWCA music venue

The new music venue is currently in the pipeline, and is being launched soon by the team behind the Kings Theatre project. The former YWCA building, which had been left to rot until the Kings lot moved in, is now looking pretty good thanks to a lot of hard work and tireless fundraising.

The Live Lounge will feature a venue for not only music and comedy, but also a community events space and of course a bar.

And in the longer term, there’s even more planned for the building ... Exciting times lie ahead.

Airshow

And of course, there’s the most recent development. The news that organisers of the Scottish International Airshow want to bring it to Kirkcaldy is phenomenal.

The Waterfront is the perfect viewing point.

Picture yourself with friends and family watching from the Prom as some of the most iconic aircraft from past and present soar through the skies above the Forth.
