A LOVING mum is planning a charity tribute night in memory of her daughter who was knocked down and fatally injured by a speeding motorist in Kirkcaldy 11 years ago.

Karen Brady (39), who now lives in Glenrothes, and her friend Yvonne Kemp, are holding a fundraising disco/karaoke night in memory of Karen’s daughter Alyshia Balfour who was just nine years-old when she was knocked down and killed in 2001.

The tragedy happened in Valley Gardens as she returned from a nearby playpark.

Alyshia was taken to Edinburgh’s Sick Kids Hospital where she died nine days later in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The driver of the car was found to be doing more than 40 m.p.h. at the time and the tragedy prompted a road safety campaign which resulted in a 20 m.p.h. speed restriction and traffic calming measures being installed on the busy thoroughfare.

And, on February 15 Charley’s Bar in Templehall is hosting ‘Over the Rainbow’ - a tribute to Alyshia, as her 21st birthday would have been on February 18.

Karen explained: “Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and imagine what she would have grown up to be like.

‘‘She was looked after at the Sick Kids Hospital, and Yvonne and I thought it would be a good idea to hold a fundraising party on what would have been her 21st birthday to raise money for the hospital.

“We have contacted local shops and businesses and we have signed Hearts and Hibs footballs to auction off as well as lots of prizes donated for the raffle and tombola.

‘‘Everyone has been very generous.”

Tickets for the event cost £5 for adults, with kids going free and it will run from 7.00 p.m. to midnight, with children’s entertainment also laid on.

All those attending are invited to dress up as a character from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ or in bright rainbow colours in Alyshia’s
