Officers investigating a serious assault in the Auchmuty area of the town on June 1 say they are continuing to follow a number of positive lines of inquiry.

A spokesman for Police Scotland confirmed that officers are investigating the incident after a 30-year-old man was attacked and injured in Malcolm Road at around 8pm.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

David Nelson, chairman of Auchmuty and Dovecot tenants and Residents Association, told the Gazette there was unease among residents in and around the Malcolm Road area following the latest incident.

“The number of serious incidents in the area in recent weeks is now staring to leave residents worried,” said Mr Nelson.

“There is a lot of speculation locally and on social media as to who was involved and why, some of the rumors are frightening, people need the police to do all they can to put a stop to it,” he added.

“We’ll be liaising with police to make sure this does not escalate.”

Police believe the assault to be an isolated incident but the spokesman added they had taken steps to provide a more visible police presence in the area around Malcolm Road in the meantime.

Officers were stationed outside a flat on Alexander Road in the days after the incident, and also for a time outside Baptist Church in Queen Margaret Drive.

With the problems encountered in 2015 regarding the installation of four CCTV cameras in Auchmuty having been overcome, community leaders hope they will act as a deterrent.

“We’re thankful the cameras are now in place and we are calling on the authorities to keep them maintained and working as they act as a good deterrent,” said Mr Nelson.

There are two cameras in Canmore Road, one in Auchmuty Road and a further one overlooking the war memorial.
