Review: Get your fill at The Novar

The Novar Bar
The Novar Bar

Novar Bar, 17 Nicol Street, Kirkcaldy

Upon first arriving at The Novar Bar in Kirkcaldy, it’s clear that this is a place which is very popular with the locals – it was positively hoaching, as we Scots say.

A busy restaurant is always a good sign, and we were definitely not disappointed upon our lunchtime visit.

The atmosphere is bright and airy – not like a pub at all – and there are lots of attentive staff on hand to serve you quickly and efficiently.

My dining companion loves to go out and eat, and loves his grub, so The Novar had a challenge on its hands, but it pulled it off with no problems – brilliant service and no complaints.

For the starter, I went with the lentil and bacon soup, which came in a big, deep bowl and piping hot! The bread basket was the perfect accompaniment to the tasty – and just on the right side of salty – soup. If you were planning something light, a bowl of this would definitely keep your tummy happy until dinner time.

Meanwhile, my dining partner went for the Stornoway black pudding fritter, which came with a fried egg and salad.

It was a big, thick piece of black pudding, but the perfect sized portion to start your meal off right.

On to the main course, and I had the ‘bandito’ chicken, chips and veg’.

The herby coating on the chicken was really tasty and went brilliantly with the sweet chilli dipping sauce, while there wasn’t a soggy chip in sight!

My companion had the fish in batter with chips, veg’ and salad – you get plenty for your money at The Novar – and he was delighted with it.

A ‘baby whale’ was how he described it, and he wasn’t wrong. It was a huge piece of fish, but cooked in a light and fluffy batter, with plenty of chips and tartare sauce on the side.

Already full to the brim, but desperate to try the sweets, we both settled on the ‘Sweet Belgian Waffle’, which came with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, chocolate and toffee sauce and cream.

It was absolutely delicious! The best course of the meal, although I would recommend everything we ate that day.

My companion managed to finish the whole thing, which was no surprise, but I have to admit I was defeated, something I wasn’t best pleased with as it was so tasty.

As you can probably guess, I wouldn’t hestitate in recommending The Novar to anyone.

It’s a bright, relaxed space, with very good customer service and huge portions of delicious food.

And with many of their meals included in a ‘two for £9.95’ deal, or two light bites for just a tenner, even those on a budget can treat themselves.

Although if you’re planning to go for lunch, here’s a tip – don’t organise your dinner as you certainly won’t need it!
