Drummonds, Balbirnie Street, Markinch
With a prime location right on the main street of Markinch, this eaterie and hotel has always drawn the crowds. But now with a new name, Drummonds is a breath of fresh air.
The building itself is still traditional, with beautiful wood cladding on the walls and big windows, but the Scottish pop art and aerospace inspired decor gives it a much more modern feel.
The menu itself provides lots of choice, from macaroni cheese, steak pie and curries, to lighter and more contemporary starters such as sauteed mushrooms on a bed of crostini, or smoked salmon and crayfish cocktail.
And that’s exactly what my dining partner for the evening, my mum, chose to get things started.
Light, and a good combination between the crayfish and smoked salmon, is how she described it, and from my seat, it certainly looked deliciious, and very well presented.
I went with the soup of the day, cream of tomato, and while it was a bit on the creamy side for me, it was the perfect sized portion, in a chic white mug, and came with a delicious warm, soft petit pain.
As the name might suggest, the real show-stoppers are the steaks and handmade burgers, and we just had to try them.
Mum chose a fillet steak - pink, but no blood - with garlic butter, while I had the classic Drummonds burger and chunky chips, with a side of garlic bread.
Mum’s steak was cooked exactly as she had ordered it, and tasted great, however if you opt for the butter, make sure you like it as you do get rather a lot!
The burger was really yummy, and the meat had a fantastic flavour - you can really tell that it’s handmade.
You get plenty of chunky chips, but overall the portion sizes were brilliant – not too little, not too much.
After a little break to make some room, we settled on sticky toffee pudding, minus the ice cream, and chocolate fudge cake for dessert. The pudding was light and quite gingery, while the fudge cake was sweet but not sickly - a great way to end the meal.
Overall, Drummonds offers impecable service and is definitely one steakhouse that really does live up to the name.
