Safety concern after skate park vandal attack

It’s thought those responsible for the attack at Leslie skate park could have used either an air rifle or catapult device to damage the spotlighting which are protected by metal grills and positioned on lampposts.

The damage, which could have been caused at any time over the last seven to 10 days, has angered a local councillor who has called on the public to help catch the culprits.

“It’s a mindless and wanton act of vandalism because all of the four lights are now damaged, but it’s also a worrying one,” said Cllr John Wincott, himself a resident of the town.

“I’ve met with Council officers who have inspected the damage and because of their height and positioning and protection of the lighting, it’s clear a concerted effort to smash them has taken place, possibly with either an air rifle or catapult,” said Cllr Wincott.

“As well as raising obvious safety concerns which need to be addressed, it also puts the facility out of action in the evenings for the many young people who enjoy using the park.

“The public frequently report to us that play areas must be improved and Fife Council has recognised that need and recently agreed to spend money improving various facilities, which makes this latest damage all the more disappointing.”

Glenrothes Community Sergeant Kenny Greig said catching the culprits was now a priority.

He said: “Since the damage what brought to our attention officers have made a significant number of enquiries and are treating this as one of our top priorities in the Leslie area,

“As yet it has not been confirmed how the damage was caused but we take a zero tolerance approach to any such acts of vandalism.

“We understand this damage caused not only considerable damage but also a negative impact on the community both in terms financial cost and quality of life.
