ENABLE Scotland have organised a firewalk for Mothers Day and have launched a competition to find St Andrews bravest mum.

The winner will get a meal for two at the Rocca Grill after the event which will raise funds to support people with a learning disability and their families.

The firewalk will take place on Mother Day, March 18, between 5 and 7.30 p.m. at the lower college hall lawn at St Andrews University.

It’s shaping up to be quite an event with African drumming band BeatRoots Drummers lined up to provide a dramatic soundtrack for the walkers as they prepare for the big moment.

Prior to the taking to the coals, firewalkers are taken through a two-hour seminar to prepare them.

Jill MacRae, Enable Scotland’s fundraising manager said: “Firewalking is an incredible way to crash through personal barriers and do the impossible.

“The excitement and adrenaline at an event like this is electric. It will be an amazing evening to raise much needed funds for Enable Scotland.

“Every day in Scotland eight babies are born with a learning disability and through our work we will help those children live a life of choice and independence”.

One mother and daughter team from St Andrews who have already signed up for the event are Morag and Elise Mayes.

Morag heard about the firewalk at work in the finance office of the university and decided to take the plunge and sign up for a truly unique experience.

“I heard about it at the university,” she explained.

“It is such a worthwhile charity, the work Enable Scotland do is fantastic so I wanted to do something to help out.

“I have never done anything like this before - it is total madness and I’m beginning to regret getting my daughter involved now!

“But I’m sure it will be fun. My mother passed away fairly recently and this will only be the second Mothers Day without her so it will be a good day for us to do something together.

“I think this will be a good way to do something positive and not dwell on anything sad. This will be a good way for me and my daughter to spend Mothers Day.”
