A 28-year-old sailor from Leven has proved to be one of Britain’s brightest engineers after beating tough competition to be crowned champion at the WorldSkills UK competition.
Aiden Campbell, based with the Royal Navy at Truro, Cornwall won the Aeronautical Engineering Avionic Gold medal after three intensive days at the Skills Show in Birmingham.
More than 100 engineers, selected at a series of regional heats, battled it out in the elite competition managed by employer-led Semta, which engineers skills for the future.
“I am ecstatic to win – the competition was so fierce,” said Aiden. “Everyone deserved to get gold so I don’t know what I have done to be above the rest. I would like to thank my wife Vicki, my sons Sunny, Connor and Mason, everyone who has given me support through the Navy and the Semta team – without them I wouldn’t have been able to enjoy this excellent experience. It is fantastic for my CV.”
Ann Watson, chief operating officer of Semta said: “Aiden is a winner – one of an army of young talented people that help keep this country great.”
