Shoppers have been flocking to the sales in Kirkcaldy’s High Street in a bid to pick up some post Christmas bargains.

Retailers have been delighted with the response to offers with many saying that sales were “up on last year” and that people seemed to be holding off until the last minute to get a good deal.

They also reported a last minute rush in the days leading up to Christmas.

At New Look in the High Street, manageress Vicki Young said the sale had been going “really well” since it started at 9.00 a.m. on Boxing Day.

She said: “It has been really busy and we have a six per cent rise on last year which is fantastic.

‘‘I think a lot of people held back this year to get a bargain. We had a lot of shoppers using gift cards to buy clothes.

‘‘Over the week of Christmas, the store was really busy - busier than it has been at this time in previous years. We don’t have any more items through the back - it’s all out on the shop floor now.”

There were the traditional queues outside the Next store with the annual sale starting at 6.00 a.m. on Boxing Day.

Selina Skivington, manager, told the Press there appeared to be more shoppers waiting outside this year.

She said: “We are definitely up on last year’s Boxing Day . It was busier than normal - we have been very busy over the last month.”

Fiona Smith, manager at British Home Stores (BHS), said the shop was open at 8.00 a.m on Boxing Day. She said: “It has been great, trade has been very steady and we are always helped by the Next sale on Boxing Day.

“Trade is generally up on last year and we have had a bigger footfall than previous years.”

She said sales in ladies knitwear have been particularly good, adding: “Many people started their Christmas shopping later than usual and were holding off to get bargains. We will keep running the sale until everything goes.”

Brian Connell, lead bookseller at Waterstone’s, said they had a really good start to their sale.

He said: “We have been fairly busy Boxing Day. I think many have been holding off until the sale starts. It really took off in the days before Christmas we had a lot of sales then and it has been busy ever since.

“Two of our best sellers this year were the Alex Ferguson and Mrs Brown’s Boys books. The Broons annual is also popular as it appeals to all ages.”

He added: “We still have another couple of weeks to go, but we have been pleased with the start of our sale.”
