Security firm for Leven?

Kenny Watson, who grew up in the area and now lives in Glenrothes, works as a security guard at Diageo, said the idea was something he has held for a while, after speaking to locals while working as a bouncer.

At a meeting held at Letham Glen Community Support Centre on Friday, Mr Watson explained that while the the proposal is still in its very early stages, the idea would be to create a paid-for accredited security firm employing frontline staff who are fully trained.

Staff could patrol problem areas, collecting information which could assist police in their duties, as well as manning rapid response vehicles; however there would be no powers of arrest.

Addressing the meeting, which welcomed police, local charitable groups and residents, Mr Watson said: “We’ve had neighbourhood watch, and my idea is like a community watch.”

Mr Watson is looking to get the backing of Fife Council, the Scottish Government and Police Scotland, and is already looking at funding options for, including company backing and local fundraising.

He is keen to gather the views of the local community before proceeding any further however, and plans to set up a panel of those involved in the community, such as street pastors and parent council members, which will then work on a survey which can be distributed throughout the community.

However, the plans have not been warmly received by local councillor and chairman of the Levenmouth area committee, Tom Adams.

He said he would not support what he saw as a ‘vigilante’ group, and believed Police Scotland was doing a good enough job already.

Community Inspector for Levenmouth Tom Brown also attended the meeting, and said he did not believe this was something that the public were looking for.

“Levenmouth is a safe place to live and work.

‘‘ I understand people are naturally concerned after the recent murder, but detection rates are high.

‘‘Is there a requirement for this sort of thing at this time? I would suggest no. And is there the public appetite to have a security firm walking the streets? I’d say no.”
