SIR Menzies Campbell MP has enlisted the help of a former field organiser for American President, Barack Obama, to help his local campaigning.

Alex Close was recently employed by the Liberal Democrats to work out of the Millgate Office in Cupar, where he will support Sir Menzies and also Scottish Party leader, Willie Rennie.

The American, who studied at Edinburgh University, was a field organiser for the Obama for America campaign in the state of Georgia, where he managed campaign volunteers, organised events and was considered key to invigorating an almost derelict Democratic Party.

Alex, who started work just before Christmas, succeeds Adam Stachura, who has taken up a new appointment as campaigns director for the Scottish Liberal Democrats based in Edinburgh.

At the Liberal Democrats’ recent AGM, the party also selected Elizabeth Riches and Donald Macgregor as its candidates for the East Neuk and Landward ward for the forthcoming 2012 Fife Council elections on May 3.

Sitting councillors, Frances Melville, Robin Waterston, Bill Sangster, Margaret Kennedy, Tim Brett and Maggie Taylor, were also selected by the party for their respective wards.
