Six businesses want to take over the running of Kirkcaldy’s main Post Office following the closure of the town’s Tesco superstore.
Customers have been promised a period of consultation before a final decision is made.
The main Post Office is currently located on a temporary basis in The Postings with a move to permanent accommodation scheduled to take place when a successful candidate is chosen.
In a letter to former MP Gordon Brown, who campaigned to keep the service on Kirkcaldy High Street, a Post Office spokesman said it was impossible to determine a timescale.
He said: “Currently we have been engaging with six applicants in the High Street area and scoping their premises for suitability.
“Once our recruitment process is complete and we have selected a successful new operator we will undertake a period of public consultation notifying the community of our plans and enabling feedback.
”If the decision is taken to proceed with the relocation, subject to the outcome of public consultation, we would then be in a position to advise on timescale and an opening date for the new branch.”
