Following the rescue plan put in place to save St Andrews Botanic Garden, a new director has been appointed.

The arrival of James Hearsum, previously curator at the Royal Botanic Garden of Jordan, was described by Dr Jean Stewart, chair of the new board of trustees, as the “first confident stride” into a future of growth and development.

“This is an important milestone for all those who have been working very hard to secure a viable future for the Garden,” Dr Stewart said.

James Hearsum, appointed after a nationwide search, was selected because of his “breadth of experience, clear vision for the Garden and enegetic leadership.”

“The opportunities for St Andrews Botanic Garden in the coming years are truly extraordinary,” said James. “Following the wonderful support received to secure its future, and the establishment of a new trust for its management, we are positioned to grow in exciting ways.

He said he was looking forward to working with staff, volunteers, friends and the wider community.
