A rumour about cash machine tampering in St Andrews looks likely to have been prompted by a case being investigated that is alleged to have taken place during The Open.

A report surfaced today (Monday) on Facebook that someone had their account cleaned out after using an ATM on Market Street.

Community Sergeant Pat Turner confirmed investigations were under way after Police Scotland were contacted regarding an alleged historical incident - the individual had used the machine during The Open in July - which had apparently just come to light.

There were no other reported incidents arising from tampering with any cash machines in St Andrews either at the time of case under investigation or currently.
