Rumours that Tesco’s store in Cupar is on a ‘hit list’ for closure have been scotched by bosses of the ailing retail giant.
Earlier this month, Tesco announced it was shelving plans to extend the South Road outlet and was to close 43 of its stores in the UK.
Rumours began flying in the town after an article in a national newspaper appeared to suggest that the Cupar store was one of those earmarked for the axe - but this week a spokesman said the decision had not yet been made.
He said: “We announced on January 8 that we have made the difficult decision to close 43 stores.
“Our first priority is to consult colleagues who are impacted by these changes and we will be speaking to them over the coming weeks.”
Hopes remain high that the Cupar store will be spared as trade is currently healthy - but it faces stiff competition when discount retailer Aldi opens a new store on a nearby site this summer.
The land that Tesco owns on the former Reekie’s site is to be sold off for housing.
