The operation of Levenmouth Child Care Centre will be transferred from Fife Council to a community-led organisation.

The Council’s executive committee has agreed to grant a 25-year lease for the running of the facility to Poppyview Family Centre from next month.

The centre – which opened in August 2008 in response to demand for full day care provision for under-5s in the Levenmouth area – has been run by Fife Council’s childcare and early years service, but it was always the intention to transfer operation of the facility to a social enterprise.

A management board is in place to take over control, and the staff are expected to transfer to the new organisation.

Independent councillor Andrew Rodger supported the transfer.

He said: “There is a really good team in place at the centre and the chairman of the board is committed to making this work.”

Councillor Bryan Poole, executive member for education, agreed it was the right move and also welcomed an assurance of parental involvement on the board.

The child care centre – based in the Methil Docks area – currently caters for around 120 children, and around 95 per cent of families using the service live in the immediate Levenmouth area.

Its most recent HMIE inspection, carried out in November 2012, resulted in a very positive report, with particular praise for the centre’s management and staff.

The centre will be leased to Poppyview Family Centre at a concessionary rent of £300 per year.
