Councillors want public views on public transport plans

How should they spend £22m on keeping region moving?

As part of its budget, Fif Council reviewing its transportation spending, including subsidised bus routes, and dial a ride.

It currently spends £22m on transportation, with around half of that going on school buses.

Councillor David Ross (Labour), co-leader, said: “We know how important transport and connectivity is for Fife.

“We put a significant amount of money into subsidising public transport.

“Over the years, we’ve looked at some reviews on how it’s going, but we’ve never really had a comprehensive look at is this the right way to be spending our money to get the best resolution for transport in Fife that we can?”

More than 50 bus services across Fife are currently subsidised, with 2.3 million journeys a year taken on them.

An over-60s rail concession and free under-19s bus travel are also supported by the council.

Councillor David Alexander (SNP), co-leader, added: “This is a highly ambitious plans.

“Our budget didn’t include any savings in transport to give us a real chance at this.”

Cllr Ross said that he hoped people from across Fife would get involved and give their views.

He added: “This approach gives more debate and discussion to the matter. It allows people in Fife to really be heard and have a part in shaping how transport across Fife operates. The more people feel they have control over what is happening, the better they feel about it.

“This is completely experimental – no one in Scotland has taken this approach before.”
