The local authority's North East area committee has approved a Traffic Regulation Order to impose restrictions on 133m of St Leonard's Road's northern edge from its junction with Hepburn Gardens in St Andrews.

In addition, 20m of the southern side of the street will be restricted, as will 10m either side of Hepburn Gardens, in order to improve visibility and to stop road users from having to swerve around parked vehicles.

In his report justifying the £2,000 expenditure, Ken Gourlay, head of assets, transportation and environment, said St Leonard's Road was frequently used by pedestrians and cyclists, and that pavement parking was creating a problem for wheelchair users and those with prams.

Colin Stirling, lead consultant in traffic management, told the committee that the request for restrictions had come from local residents.

He said: "Vehicles on pavements have been problematic over the years."
