Councillors have agreed to bring in new charges which start later this month.

They were originally signed off in January, but put on hold because of the pandemic.

Electric car owners will now have to pay when they use any of the region’s 40-plus charging stations.

They will cost 15p per kWh plus a £1.60 connection charge per session.

That works out at an average cost of 4.3p per mile.

The charges were due to come into force in January, but were put on hold during the pandemic.

Councillors at the economy, tourism, strategic planning and transportation committee agreed it was time to kick-start the new system from November 16.

Councillor Altany Craik, who convenes the committee, said the service had to be self-sustaining.

He added that EV charging points were not there to be used for parking - and anyone doing that could face a penalty notice.
