Fife Council is to divert road crews to tackling potholes in roads across the region.

The local authority also wants motorists to report any new potholes to its helpline.

The moves come just days after Alex Rowley MSP published data which showed the region faced 367 claims for compensation last year - but paid out just four times.

The Labour politician - a former council leader - branded the state of the as “an awful mess” and called on the council to push for extra resources to repair them.

Today, it said more focus would go on tackling the damage caused to roads during a tough winter.

Councillor Altany Craik, convener of the economy, tourism strategic planning and transportation sub-committee said: “Every year around this time, the wet wintry weather makes more potholes open up on our road network.

“But this year has been exceptional, with one of the coldest Januarys we’ve had for many years.

“What’s been particularly challenging is that many of these potholes have formed while crews have been working around the clock to keep our roads safe from ice and snow.”He added: “We share everyone’s frustration that we now have so many to deal with. “Mr Craik said the council was “taking full advantage of the mild weather” to divert most of our roadworkers from their other duties onto pothole repairs.

He said: “These extra teams are working seven days a week at the moment to clear the backlog of pothole repairs as quickly as possible. “
