Scotrail adds Fife stop to fast morning service to Edinburgh

Passengers travelling by rail from Leuchars to Edinburgh in the mornings will now have a faster option.

Normally there are five southbound trains between Leuchars and Edinburgh between 7.50am-10am. However, because of the disruption to services following the landslip at Carmont, the cross-Border LNER and CrossCountry services are starting at Edinburgh, reducing the number of services to three.

However, after Councillor Jane Ann Liston suggested that the fast train stop at Leuchars, Scotrail agreed to introduce a call this week at 8.34am, arriving at Edinburgh Waverley at 9.28am, having ascertained that this will not impinge upon other services.

The fast train does not normally stop at Leuchars, due to restrictions on the Tay Bridge

The St Andrews councillor said: “I’m very pleased with this result and thanks are due to Fife Council Transportation Service and Scotrail for agreeing to it. There’s still a gap of over an hour where the cross-Border trains would normally run but at least there are now four trains during that critical period in the morning.”

Cllr Liston admitted that Scotrail said that it will revert to the normal stopping pattern once through trains can run from Aberdeen.

She added: “However, I will be pushing for it to continue stopping at Leuchars, if at all possible. Leuchars is, after all, Fife’s fourth busiest station, due to its proximity to St Andrews, hence the reason all the other fast trains to Edinburgh stop there. Because of the high demand it makes sense to stop all trains at Leuchars.”
