ScotRail urged to add more stops at Fife train station

ScotRail has been urged to introduce additional stops at a north east Fife train station, to better connect rural communities.

At the moment, just three trains stop at Springfield Station en route to Dundee, and two trains stop en route to Edinburgh.

MSP Willie Rennie said constituents have been contacting him for the last two years regarding the lack of stops at the station.

Mr Rennie is seeking to arrange a meeting with ScotRail to discuss means to review the Scottish rail network’s timetabling and the possibility of introducing an additional train to stop at lunchtime.

“Scotrail said they would review the issue in advance of the next new timetable, which was launched in October last year, but nothing has changed,” Mr Rennie said.

“Access to public transport is especially important in connecting rural areas in north east Fife, and in reducing social isolation.

“It is now high time that they carefully consider introducing an additional train to stop at lunchtime both ways. Increasing rail services at Springfield would benefit the area, where there has been an increase in the population as a result of new housing being constructed.

“ScotRail need to think again.”

A ScotRail spokesperson said: “We understand that our timetables may not suit everyone, but they are in place to provide the best possible service for as many people as possible.

“Over the course of this year, we’ll continue to make improvements to our timetable to benefit the people of Fife, and to deliver a railway they can be proud of.”
