Snow: Major disruption across Fife as Queensferry Crossing closed

The first major snowfall of winter has brought widespread disruption across Fife this morning.

Commuters face lengthy delays after the Queensferry Crossing was closed in both directions.

All traffic is being diverted via the Kincardine Bridge – the Forth Road Bridge was already closed for maintenance work which had been extended after being hit by poor weather.

The closure came after the first thundersnow in the early hours which saw many people woken by a loud bang around 5:00am

Chris Tracey, BEAR Scotland’s South East Unit Bridges Manager, said: “The safety of bridge users comes first and therefore we’ve made the decision to temporarily close the Queensferry Crossing due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.

“We are constantly monitoring the structure in real time using a bespoke system of weather sensors on the towers and deck of the Queensferry Crossing.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to road users by this closure and will reopen the bridge when safe to do so.”

The closure of the crossing has also impacted on public transport with buses for Edinburgh terminating at Halbeath Park and Ride.

Services across the region were all hit and subject to delays or cancellation.

Bay Travel, which operate many local routes, advised commuters all services were being hit by the weather

Fife Council sald primary routes were gritted at 3:30am and conditions are being monitored.

There were reports of cars getting stuck on roads across the Kingdom, adding to the delays experienced by commuters.

The weather also impacted on sport – Kirkcaldy Golf Club confirmed the course was closed.
