Local entrepreneurs are being invited pitch their ideas in a ‘dragons den’ with the winner being given the start up chance that could change their life.

Fife Council in partnership with the new owners of the Kingdom Centre, MARS Pension Trustees Ltd, is organising a competition to find a new retail business who can prove they’ve got what it takes to trade in the busy Centre and bring something a bit different to the town.

Similar to the formula of the hit BBC2 TV series, entrants go through the process of pitching to business experts for a chance to land what councillor Altany Craik, chairman for the town’s Area Committee as described as a “chance of a lifetime”.

“The recession has hit town centres hard across Fife and Glenrothes is no exception.

“We’re working with partners including the Kingdom Shopping Centre to bring new life into our towns, improve people’s shopping experience and, at the same time, give new business the opportunity to grow and thrive,” added the councillor.

“This competition is a great way of achieving all these things and I’m very much looking forward to welcoming a new business to Glenrothes”

The competition winner will be based in premises at 10 Unicorn Way in the Kingdom Shopping Centre, formerly McLeish Fishmongers.

The winning retailer will then test trade from the premises for a six month period before deciding on the way forward.

“All entrants to the competition will receive support from Business Gateway Fife to help their businesses develop and grow, and the successful winner will receive extensive support through their test trade period.

“At the end of the test trade period we’ll discuss next steps with our entrepreneurs to grow and the feasibility of developing permanent premises within the Centre,” explained Mr Craik.

Robert Winter, centre manager welcomed the initiative: “The shop unit donated by the Centre’s owners will offer a superb beginning to the budding entrepreneurs.”
