Around a dozen vehicles including an armed response unit converged on the TSB bank in Dunearn Drive around 10.40am as astonished shoppers looked on in alarm.

Neighbouring traders reported seeing two armed officers entering the bank which was quickly cordonned off by police tape and a huge police presence in the area.

Staff and customers from the bank were seen being taken by officers to the adjacent Templehall Community Centre.

One local shopkeeper told the Press: “We didn’t have a clue anything was going on until dozens of police just appeared on the scene. It was like something from a film.”

Another said: “I saw two armed policemen running into the bank. It was quite frightening. They haven’t told us what is going on and I think we should have been so we can keep an eye on things here.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Police are currently in attendance at the TSB in Dunearn Drive in Kirkcaldy following reports of an armed robbery at around 10.40am this morning.

There is still a large police presence in the area and officers were seen at a house in a neighbouring street in Templehall, although it is not known if this was related to the incident.

This is the second bank raid in three months in the town, with the Bank of Scotland at Mitchelston Industrial Estate targeted in November.

One man is currently in custody in relation to that incident.
