Vandals hit Kirkcaldy park again

A bench built by volunteers in Kirkcaldy’s Dunnikier Park has been targetted by vandals – for the third time, while fencing has been pulled down and grass churned up by motor and quad bikes.

The bower style wooden seat with a semi-circular stone back, which was hand-built by volunteers from Greener Kirkcaldy and Dunnikier Country Park Development Group to give visitors the park a place to rest and enjoy the scenery, was first set on fire around a month ago, causing the seat to be badly scorched.

Park users were then upset to see it surrounded by broken bottles and empty beer cans, making it a danger to park users with dogs or young children.

In a more recent attack the stone framework of the seat was attacked with a hammer, while fencing around an edible forest garden area was also destroyed.

Police officers recently met with members of the two voluntary groups to discuss what actions could be taken to try to protect the area.

Jim Crosbie, secretary/treasuere of the development group, described the vandalism as “regrettable.”

“It is really disheartening because we are trying so hard to create a facility that offers something for everyone,” he said.

“We accept that people will use it in different ways, but the destruction is just unacceptable. People have given up their time to transform the area and others have just decided to destroy it.”
