Every now and again a small event takes the world by storm.
Just such a happening took place in St Andrews on Sunday afternoon when a fourteen-year-old piper struck up ‘Scotland the Brave’ to drown out a street preacher whose noisy and reportedly homophobic ranting was causing offence.
In previous times the teenager might have simply taken a bow in response to the cheers and applause he received from passing shoppers and others enjoying a drink outdoors near the fountain in Market Street.
However, in the age of social media, the incident was captured by eyewitness Lachie Blair who posted his video to YouTube and the Overheard in St Andrews Facebook site.
Within hours the story of how the teenager piped down a ‘hate preacher’ was an internet sensation.
The video clocked up millions of views, it trended on Facebook, was picked up by print, television and online media worldwide, and from playing his pipes for just over a minute, Daniel Boyle became known as the boy who had taken down the ranting preacher in the most Scottish way possible.
It is understood the street preacher had been in action for around an hour using a small amplifier when customers at the Keys Bar encouraged Daniel, who was on a family holiday at Kinkell Braes caravan park, to drown him out with his pipes.
A complaint had already been made to the police and at the end of the video, a police van pulls up and an officer talks to the preacher.
Police confirmed they had been called to Market Street around 3.30pm in response to a complaint about noise and after being spoken to by officers, the man in question packed up and left.
